Baptism and Becoming a Christian in the New Testament

چکیده
The purpose of this article is to investigate how baptism is related to the experience of conversion in the New Testament. As a result I shall not deal with the following important subjects: the meaning of the term “to baptize” (baptidzein is generally conceded to mean “to dip or immerse”); the origin of Christian baptism (it is probably not dependent upon Jewish proselyte baptism since there is no evidence of this practice before A.D. 70 and proselyte baptism was self-administered; it is unlikely that it has any direct relationship to Qumran’s lustrations [1 QS 3:4-9, 6:14-23]; it is probably dependent upon the baptism of John the Baptist [Jn 3:22, 4:1-3] but the origin of John’s baptism is unknown); the relationship of “laying on hands” to receiving the Spirit; etc. In order to facilitate the discussion, I shall state a general thesis of how baptism in the New Testament is related to the experience of conversion. Although this thesis, like any thesis, cannot be “proven,” I shall seek to demonstrate that it is able to explain the majority of the New Testament evidence quite well. The thesis is as follows:

متن کاملAtonement: the Rite of Healing
There has recently been a number of books on the Christian understanding of atonement. What has been fascinating for me is the extent to which these books do, or more often do not, use the Old Testament material on atonement as the basis for what they have to say. The New Testament speaks in a variety of ways about atonement, and this has become the centre of Christian dogmatics; but this ‘aton...

A special aspect of the question whether it is possible to do Christian theology is the question whether it is possible to do Old Testament theology. Indeed, there is a sense in which the possibility of the former depends upon the possibility of the latter. This is because the task of interpreting the Old Testament as such has been considered a distinctive part of the church's theological endea...

In this paper, an investigation on the relation between state-building and Near Eastern religion is attempted. Analyzing the city-state of Ḥaṭrā (Iraq, close to Kirkuk), it is demonstrated that pre-Islamic state craft in the region was dependent on the initiative of the Parthian monarchy in Iran. The kings of the Arsacid dynasty attempted to bestow the local Arabic tribes in the Jazira with a c...
